When you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger, you receive a message with error code “Error 80048820 and extended error 80048416″ that states that the Messenger service was unable to sign you in and that you should try again later. To resolve this issue, try the following:

Step 1:

In Internet Explorer, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation check box.

  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Security, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation check box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Exit Internet Explorer.

Step 2:

Sign in to Messenger again. If you experience the same issue, contact Support. At the bottom of this Help page, click Get more help, and then click Get support.
