It appears as if I’m having the same problem Jhon has. I’m trying to install XP in a laptop HP6735s. It came originally with Vista, but I want to install XP instead. Problem is: after loading all the controllers, when it should go to the screen offering the different options for installation, it just shuts down, and a screen appears reporting error as:
stop 0×0000007B
(0xF78DE524 0xC0000034 0xC00000000 0xC00000000)
Can anyone tell what’s going on?
The XP I’m installing has SATA drivers, and I have succesfully installed it in other PC and a notebook.
Anyway, my guess is that maybe it does not have the driver for that specific hard drive.

I have exactly the same thing – from what I can tell, you need to have Vista already installed on the machine to downgrade. (I had this but erased it because i didn’t want to use vista at all).
I’m trying to find instructions on how to actually downgrade – I have a brand new copy XP Pro, the regular version SP2 and the 64-bit version SP2c – the same result with both of them???
I am now re-installing Vista to see if there’s a way of downgrading from within Vista…??? argh!
So… here’s what you have to do.
Start the laptop, press [ESC] for the startup menu – choose BIOS SETTINGS…
Go into CONFIGURATION SETTINGS You need to change the HD SATA mode to IDE instead of SATA.
Once you do this, any installed OS will not run – you can now install your copy of XP.
Once you’ve done that, download and install the relevant drivers listed above
when you did this did it install correctly i have sp3 will it work doing it the same way

if you have the problem with BSOD installing XP – just switch your HDD to IDE in BIOS!

Had the same problem & searched the internet for the solution. No joy there. Here it is….found it myself.
1st you have to format the hard drive and use your windows xp cd etc etc.
I installed windows XP home edition 2000 edition(no service packs) & had no sound.
Forget the other suggestions & progressively install all the service packs via online downloads. When you have successfully installed service pack 3, bingo!..all the required drivers/firmware will be installed. Restart your computer once sp3 is installed & all will fine…I hope!
